Defamilarization

This apple is not a typical apple that you want to eat right away. This apple is imported directly from the Milyang Ice Valley in South Korea. Due to the ice valley’s wide daily temperature range, this apple grew up very slowly in a harsh environment. As a result, this apple has the greatest adaptability so you can keep it fresh for the longest period of time among all types of apples. Just place this anywhere in your home, it will last long and give you a sweet apple scent like an air freshener. The more amazing aspect of this apple is that it is good for your skin. Just grind this apple and put it on your face for 10 minutes and rinse it out. In the same way that the apple lasts long, your face will last long with its current skin. It will prevent you from getting wrinkles and it will also hide your freckles. Only $29.99 and you will get both a younger looking face and a natural air freshener.

The meaning of defamiliarization is taking what we know and looking at it differently. People usually eat an ordinary apple and use them for making pie and juice. However, I treated the apple as an item that has more functions, such as a natural air freshener and skin care product, in order to sell it with a high profit. It may or may not be true, but I looked at the apple, not as food but as something that had other uses which people feel strange about. Hence, I believe this was one example where I defamiliarized an apple.

Intertextuality

Writing Class

“Who are you?” if you ask me,

I will say I am an expert at playing Tetris.

“Where are you going?” if you ask me,

I will say I am going to see a pretty nice car that my best friend just bought.

“What are you doing?” if you ask me,

I will say,

Thinking,

Writing,

Presenting,

Again and again

Oh, Dr. Rand!

This poem was made with words which came directly from my day note. My day note was originally written in class for critical thinking, writing practice, and explaining writing terms. However, those words were referenced to make a new poem. Therefore, I took the old materials (words) which are functioning as their own job in the context and put them together to repurpose it. Therefore, I chose this day note for the example of intertextuality.

Day Note where I challenged my Assumption and asked a Big Question

Question of the Day

“Is it better to be somewhat literate in many things or an expert in one or two?”

I believe that the more fields you become literate in, the better. I trusted the old saying in Korea “Dig only one well, then you will find water”. This old saying implies that if you learn only one thing and try to be an expert in that area, you will eventually succeed. When I saw some successful people like Yuna Kim, the famous figure skater, who trained themselves since they were young, I was jealous of them because they were an expert in one thing and obtained a world-wide reputation for it. If I think about it now, it is great to be literate in many things. I used to practice Tae-Kwon Do when I was 5, go to piano academy at age 7 for 2 years, go to English academy when I was an elementary school student, and go to math academy when I was a high school student. I wasn’t an expert at any one of them, but I at least knew the posture of Tae-kwon do, how to read notes from piano, literate in English, and good at Math. Those things that I have learned became who I am right now, a person who is understanding other cultures better and fast at learning chemistry and physics in English at UNCC. Therefore, if you are literate in many things, there are more chances for you to experience other fields without difficulties.

For this question, I wrote that being an expert at one thing is better than being literate in many things because I used to hate myself since I did not have a dream to pursue. Also, I considered myself to know a little bit in many different areas. However, I erased the day note and changed my argument toward being literate in many things. This question could be easy but it challenged my old assumption about being an expert in one area guaranteeing success. I asked a big question to myself of whether or not I am enjoying my life. And I answered to myself that I am enjoying every process in becoming a pharmacist. If I consider success as living a happy life, I succeed without being an expert at one thing. Instead, being literate in many things put me in the situation where I am feeling happy because English gave me an opportunity to meet new people, math knowledge gave me good grades in physics, general chemistry, and calculus, and Tae-kwon do developed me to have endurance.

Challenging My Assumption

I’d like to continue writing about

People only see what they are prepared to see.

–Ralph Waldo Emerson Quotes

This is very true that people only see what they are prepared to see. One time, my friend told me a story and asked me a question.

A father was driving with his son and they got into a tragic accident. The father was killed instantly from the accident and the son was transferred to the emergency room. A doctor approached him to check his status and said with a surprised face “Oh, my son!”

What is the relationship between the doctor and the patient?

I answered that the doctor might be the patient’s god father, biological father, or a misunderstanding due to the face injury. However, the real answer was “Mother and son”. When I watch TV shows or visit the doctor’s office, I most likely saw many men doctors. Therefore, in my head I was already prepared to see the doctor as a man. Therefore, I couldn’t see other possible relationships.

I would like to write more about this. I already experience my bias many times and tried to understand other cultures or see things more objectively, but I committed to display my bias from the ethnography project again. If I had more chances, I would like to write the problem of bias regarding the role of women and men, and how to change our perception.

My favorite Day Note

Question of the Day

“Describe this class room and how it operates.”

“Draw a scene of learning in this class room.”

Every student comes in and sits in their seats and starts thinking about one topic very deeply. Dr. Rand keeps asking students to think more deeply while asking why and how. Even though students thought that the topic was very basic and easy, she made us to see it differently so that she leads us to bringing a creative argument and challenge. This class starts with thinking and ends with thinking as well.

“Draw a scene of learning in this class room”

So far, I love this day note with my drawing. This class changed my attitude and made me to be a more considerable person towards a subject. Everybody has different ways to describe our class, but I was focusing more on how Dr. Rand drives us to think deeply. I thought of it as digging a deep hole to reach a point of critical thinking. Therefore, I drew one scene that can show how this class operates. Upon finishing the drawing, I secretly laughed because the drawing represented my thoughts so well. I hope that Dr. Rand doesn’t get angry at me because I drew her like a cult icon.
